I love cats, and have three of my own. I would love to adopt them all, but I just can’t. River Kitty Cat Café had a kickstarter campaign to get their cat café opened I happily donated. As a thank you I got to go in and check out the place before it opens to the public.
First, let’s get all the contact info, links, and details out of the way.
Yes, there is a café with coffee, tea, sweets, etc. Full menu here.
No, you don’t have cats around you when you eat. You don’t bring food into their area either, only beverages with lids.
You have the option of going in the specially built cat lounge for an hour ($7) and play with the kitties, or just decompress with one of the lovey lap cats for a bit. The cats all come from the Vanderburgh Humane Society and are available for adoption. Adoption takes places through the humane society. There are 10 cats here right now, you can see them here. Everyone is asked to sanitize hands before entering and after leaving the lounge. There are also double doors to help keep any kitties from getting out. So, if you don’t want to be around the cats that is not an issue. You can observe through the glass if that’s more comfortable (I still recommend going in and visiting the cats!)
The lounge where visitors go (around 15 people allowed..reserve a time here.) has seating, tables, lots of climbing areas and beds for the cats plus tons of toys! There are water bowls out, but everything else like litter boxes, food, and places for them to get away are below that room. They have a trunk that covers an entrance to their other room below.

I love it! I think cats can have a hard time getting adopted from just seeing them at a shelter. Now, some shelters like Warrick County Humane Society has a cat room, so they can roam a bit.
However, animals can be so stressed from being in a strange environment, cage, or near other animals that they don’t interact with people who come to look for a pet. That makes it hard to adopt an animal if you have no idea of its personality. These cats will stay here until they find a home, but I think that won’t be hard from my experience with them.
These cats, and we saw close to if not all of them are relaxed, playful, and so friendly. y own cats are not this playful or friendly to strangers. You sit down and I had a cat on my lap right away, Riley! There are some younger ones who run and run and then the little bit older who are mellow and lay around a bit. There was 3 or 4 I’d gladly take home. I really loved big orange boy, Garfield!
I hope this business succeeds and others can do similar ones with more cats or dogs. There are so many that need homes and would be wonderful additions to a family.
The food and drink I didn’t get to try, but I will be going back for that for sure. I hope on my next visit I don’t see the cats from before and I see new ones, and that means they found homes.
