I was gone one weekend camping for OWL training (Outdoor Webelos Leader training for Cub Scouts) so Hubs and the kids had movie night without me. They ended up watching Ernest Joins the Army, and seemed to really enjoy it. We went to Family Video (our only video store now) and looked for another Ernest movie. We settled on Ernest Goes to Jail (Rated PG 81 minutes).
I remember Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney) on local TV commercials for car dealerships. He was known for his catch phrase of “Know what I mean, Vern?” He was a slap stick, klutzy kind of guy. Sort of reminds me of Jerry Lewis in his films as the lovable idiot.
Ernest works at a bank as a janitor. He’s not the brightest guy, and is quite accident prone. Somehow he ends up jury duty, where a convict notices him. Ernest bares an uncanny resemblance to a big time criminal, and a plan is hatched to swap places.
It was a fun movie, lots of slapstick, which is a favorite of my kids. They love movies with people falling, and crazy stunts. This was perfect for them. We will continue to watch the rest of the Ernest movies to see what other trouble Ernest gets himself into!
